Row 1: p1, *k2, p2 acr, end p1
Row 2: k1, *p2, k2 acr, end k1
Rep Rows 1 & 2 15 times (32 rows total).
Beg Armhole Shaping: BO 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows (52 st).
Cont in patt for 26 more rows. BO 13 st at beg of next 2 rows; BO rem st.
Fronts: Note that the LF and the RF are NOT reversible; the pattern must be established on each piece at the beginning.
LF: CO 32 st.
Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 6 rows.
Row 7: (RS) k1, *p3, k3 acr, end p1
Rows 8-29: repeat Row 7
Row 30: Begin Front Shaping: Dec 1 st at the front edge every other row 13 times.
Row 32: Begin Armhole Shaping: BO 2 st at armhole edge 3 times.
When front measures the same length as back, BO rem 13 st.
RF: CO 32 st.
Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 6 rows.
Row 7: (RS) p1, *k3, p3 acr, end k1
Rows 8-29: repeat Row 7
Rows 30 – end: Work as for LF, reversing the shaping. (Note: keep a knit ridge nearest to the sweater’s front opening on both pieces.)
Sleeves: (make 2) CO 41 st. Work in k1, p1 rib for 8 rows.
Row 9: (RS) k1, *p3, k3 acr, end k1
Row 10: (WS) p1, *k3, p3 acr, end p1
Rep rows 9 & 10 four more times (18 rows)
*Inc 1 st at each end of next row, work 9 rows even*
Rep sequence betw * above twice more (47 st)
When sleeve measures 9”, beg sleeve cap shaping: BO 3 st at beg of ea row 13 times (8 st remain). BO 8.
Varsity Stripe on front (optional): (make 2) CO 10 st. Work 2 rows st st.
Row 3: k4, BO 2, k4
Row 4: p4, m 2, p4
Rows 5 & 6: St st
Rep rows 3-6 until piece measures the width of your front panel just above the k1, p1 ribbing (approx. 5.5”). BO. Stitch across front panel, aligning bottom edge of strip w/ top of k1, p1 ribbing on front. (You can also use any cable or other pattern that strikes your fancy, change the width of the stripe, or omit it altogether. Don’t you love knitting?)
Hood/Front Band: CO 180 st. Work in k1, p1 rib for 7 rows. BO 22 st at beg of next 2 rows (136 st). Work 1 row even. Dec 1 st at beg and end of each row 28 times (80 st remain). Work 1 row even. BO.
Finishing: With RS tog, sew front to back at shoulders. Fit sleeve caps into armholes and sew in place. Stitch sleeve and underarm seams. Fold hood in half so that one front band lies atop the other. Stitch the hood seam from the fold to where the shaping begins. With RS tog, pin hood and front band around front and neck edges of sweater, matching front edges and center back, aligning shaped edge of band with neck shaping on fronts.
